A former cooperage on Wythe Avenue converted into a light-filled home for two architects, with the raw brick and timber of the original building left openly on view.

Leaving things alone

Our clients asked us to do as little as possible to the brick, beams and floors. The design effort went into what they would not notice: new services hidden in a raised floor, acoustic insulation above the joists, and windows that finally keep the winter out.

Brooklyn light

West-facing windows fill the loft with low evening sun off the river. The palette of chalk, oak and brick was tested against that light at every stage.
