Amagansett House
- Location
- The Hamptons, New York
- Scope
- Residential Architecture
- Year
- 2024
- Area
- 7,400 sq ft
A new shingle-style house on the Amagansett dunes, drawn in the local vernacular and opened inside to long views of grass, sky and sea.
Note
Local vernacular
Cedar shingles, a deep porch and steep gables tie the house to a century of East End building. The proportions are traditional; the plan behind them is not. Rooms open fully to the porch, and the second floor is pulled back under the roof to keep the house low on the landscape.
Note
Salt and oak
Interior surfaces were chosen to weather gracefully in salt air: bleached white oak, unlacquered brass and limewashed walls that can be refreshed each spring with a single coat.
A summer house for all seasons
Radiant floors and a central chimney mass make the house as comfortable in February as in August. The family now spends more of the year here than in the city.
