A timber farmhouse in Columbia County, extended with a new wing that looks into the pines and anchored by a stone hearth built from the site's own fieldstone.
Note
A new wing
The original farmhouse is small-windowed and inward-looking. The new wing does the opposite: a single long room on a fieldstone plinth, glazed on three sides and roofed with deep eaves that keep the summer sun off the glass.
Note
Deep reveals
Window reveals are lined in charred larch and made deep enough to sit in. From inside, the forest arrives framed and dimmed, like a painting hung in a dark room.
Built from the site
Stone for the hearth and plinth was cleared from the property's old field walls. The house now sits on the same material that once divided its land.
