A cast-iron-district loft on Mercer Street, reorganised around its original timber columns and returned to the long, open light of a working floor.
Note
Original structure
Previous renovations had divided the floor into six small rooms. We removed every partition that was not load-bearing and let the double row of heart-pine columns define the plan instead. Sleeping and bathing spaces now sit in two freestanding volumes that stop short of the ceiling, so the full length of the loft is always legible.
Note
A single stone
The kitchen island is cut from one block of Verde Alpi marble, its veining book-matched around the corners. Everything else in the kitchen is deliberately quiet — concrete-grey cabinetry, pale oak stools — so that the stone can carry the room.
Working light
Lofts like this were built for daylight. The design simply gets out of its way: low furniture, no upper cabinets on the window side, and lighting that reads as a warm afterglow once the sun has gone.
