A prewar Park Avenue apartment reworked as a sequence of calm, softly proportioned rooms for a family living with a significant collection of post-war art.
Note
Walls for art
The apartment was planned from the collection outward. Door openings were shifted to give each major work an uninterrupted wall, and a discreet picture-rail system is recessed into the plaster cornice so that the hang can change without a single new hole.
Note
Oak and shadow
In the family room a single wall of fumed oak panelling conceals storage, a bar and the television. The panels are grooved at irregular intervals, so the wall reads as texture in raking light rather than as cabinetry.
Quiet by design
Acoustic plaster ceilings, lined curtains and wool rugs make the apartment unusually quiet for its address. The result feels less like a showpiece than a well-kept private gallery that a family happens to live in.
